The private colleges and universities that make up The Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges have a substantial impact on the state's economy -- about $5.551 billion in 2003, nearly two percent of the state's output. Our member institutions employ over 81,874 employees, or close to one in every 47 jobs in the state.

Given the strength of these numbers, it is easy to see how promoting private higher education in Georgia has a far-reaching effect on the state's economic systems. By supporting independent colleges and universities, we support the communities surrounding those schools, where students, faculty, and staff live, shop, and work; and encourage spending by the schools themselves on instruction, research, public service, and capital projects.

GFIC's economic impact study of 27 of Georgia's private colleges and universities during the 2003 fiscal year reports in detail the communities that each school affects and the individual impact of each school on its local market. The report, which includes forecasted numbers for 2005, is available through this web site in PDF format. Download report. (PDF: 156K)
