Ruth Davis Spelman College, Class of 1966 B.A., Sociology "If not for my time at Spelman, were it not for the fact that I was a Merrill Scholar, I am absolutely positive that I would not be where I am today." Ambassador Ruth Davis's four years at Spelman College took her on a journey across the globe and inspired her to pursue a career in international affairs. Today, she is the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Foreign Service, responsible for 36,000 employees that are spread out across the world. While enrolled at Spelman, Ambassador Davis received a Merrill Scholarship that allowed her to spend 15 months studying and traveling in Europe and the Middle East. While there, "I met many African students who were talking about going back to Africa to do nation building. We were talking about civil rights in the '60s. That was an important social issue in the United States. [But] we weren't talking about nations that would become independent, and so I got very excited about the concept of international affairs and wanted to go to Africa." After receiving a master's degree from the School of Social Work at the University of California - Berkeley, the Atlanta native did travel to Africa, and entered the Foreign Service in 1969 as Consular Officer in Kinshasa, Zaire. Since then, she's served in Nairobi, Kenya; Tokyo, Japan; and Naples, Italy, and as Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Consul General in Barcelona, Spain, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs. Before her recent appointment, she served as the Director of the Foreign Service Institute at the Department of State. |
