Ray Lucas Oglethorpe University, Class of 1986 B.S., Biology/Pre-Med. "I started out at Oglethorpe wanting to do nothing but get straight A's, excel in science, and get into medical school. And yet, one of the most enjoyable classes -- and my most humbling experience -- was freshman English. Now, as an emergency physician, I thrive on my broad base of learning. I see patients in the ER, teach residents, do clinical research, and work in disaster medicine. "In emergency medicine, I see it all and can't predict what's coming next -- a heart attack, a baby with a fever, an older person dying, a psychotic breakdown, a rescue from collapsed structures. I'm also staring into the medicine of the future. Discoveries from the genome project and immunology research didn't even exist when I was in college and medical school. However, these factors will profoundly influence the practice of all forms of medicine." A scholarship helped Ray Lucas finance his education at Oglethorpe University. He graduated in 1986, and went on to get his M.D. at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Now, he's the Medical Director for Emergency Medical Services at George Washington University Hospital in Virginia, and he has an impressive list of additional accomplishments. Some highlights:
