Jody Sirmans Mercer University, Class of 1992 B.S., Engineering "Positive impact? I can't describe the impact. I'm able to do things and go places that growing up I could only dream of." Jody Sirmans is speaking of his education at Mercer University, where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1992. Upon graduating, he immediately began working at the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, where he still is today, working as a Senior Aerospace Engineer. "As an engineer, this is about as good as it gets," he reflects. "We are designing and building the most advanced aircraft in the world, using the latest methods and tools available." Sirmans agrees that his Mercer education put him ahead of the game in qualifying for the position. As a Mercer student, he co-oped at the Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC), which operates in cooperation with the Engineering School. "This gave me invaluable experience that put me way ahead of other students during the job interview process." With the help of the career office at the Engineering School, he easily secured the position. "My education prepared me well. Mercer's broad approach to teaching engineering has given me the depth to design, program, analyze, and present ideas to management and customers, as well as to determine scheduling and expenses." The personal attention he received in his classes was also a plus. "They made sure I understood every concept and formula...you will not find that at any of the larger schools." Both Sirmans and his wife, also a Mercer grad, received the financial aid they needed to attend the school. "The financial aid office basically did all they could to make sure I had some assistance...and my wife attended Mercer under a full scholarship." Sirmans's future aspirations include graduate school and a position as a program manager on an engineering team. "After I retire, I would eventually teach high school or college. I would also like to coach a team to the Little League World Series, but that is another story." |
